The first contestant to answer after the question is asked causes 3 events to occur: 1) A loud tone sounds, 2) All other contestants are locked out 3) The contestant’s indicator LED lights up on the Master Control Board to let the teacher know who to call on. The control board features a selectable time out tone that can be adjusted to any period of time from 3 seconds to 15 seconds. This tone is totally separate from the answer tone.
